Old and new - there is endless variety in Barcelona's architecture. You find very old churches, like the Barcelona Cathedral, next to futuristic office buildings.
But the most famous examples of great architecture as well as sculptures, gardens and even furniture and other decorative objects in Barcelona are the ones designed by the Art Nouveau architect Antoni Gaudí (1852 - 1926), like the Casa Míla (second from left), the Palacio Güell, Parc Güell, the Colonia Gúell, Casa Vicens and Casa Batlló. Gaudí also worked on the Sagrada Familia cathedral (third from left), before he tragically got run over by a tram.
These monuments represent Gaudís fancy and colorful style, which is full of arches and curves and includes lots of painted tiles and flowery ornaments. Gaudí's science and art and was so inspired by nature that he integrated the shapes and structures of plants, animals and the forces of nature into his works.
But why do many works of Gaudí contain Güell in their name? That's easy: Eusebi Güell, a very wealthy and influential man of Barcelona, was a good friend of Gaudí and an admirer of his art. He invested a fortune on letting Gaudí beautify the city with his works.
