Spanish teacher training courses

Spanish teacher training courses

International House Barcelona has been training teachers of Spanish since 1986, as well as being one of Europe's top ELT (or TEFL) teacher training centres.

We currently train over 200 Spanish language teachers per year on our courses and also run a major annual Spanish as a foreign language (or ELE) conference, Encuentro Práctico.

In Barcelona, we offer three basic training course programmes for Spanish teachers:

Introductory (or Pre-service) courses

These courses are designed for fluent Spanish speakers (either native or non-native) who would like to learn how to teach Spanish to foreigners. We offer these courses on both an intensive (full-time) basis, as well as an extensive (part-time) basis.

The intensive courses last for 4 weeks (120 hours) and cover both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching. The extensive courses last 6 weeks and cover exactly the same syllabus.

Those students who hold a University degree, have a suitably high level of Spanish (native or near-native speaker level) and who successfully complete one of these Introductory Training courses, receive an officially recognised teaching certificate from the University of Barcelona. This certificate is also equivalent to 6 credits on the University of Barcelona's Masters course in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

The University of Barcelona's "UB Virtual" certificates our Spanish teacher training courses as part of their "Master ELE" degree.

Methodology and culture courses

These courses are designed for Spanish teachers whose first language is not Spanish.

Methodology course

This 40-hour, two week course covers the following content:

  • Teaching portfolio
  • Group dynamics
  • Typology of activities
  • Skills
  • Planning a unit of work
  • Language and vocabulary presentation and practice

Methodology and culture course

This 65-hour, two week course looks at the same content as the Methodology course (above) together with the following subjects:

  • Error correction, pronunciation, second language acquisition and planning of classes, among others
  • Grammar review
  • Observation and commentary on classes given by International House teachers
  • Sessions on Spanish culture

These courses are designed for non-native teachers of Spanish who probably have some teaching experience. Teachers are given the opportunity to refresh and develop their teaching skills and broaden their knowledge of Spanish culture.

Tailor-made teacher training courses

We can provide tailor-made teacher training courses to suit the needs and requirements of any particular group of teachers. We are also happy to send our trainers to other cities or countries to run on-site teacher training courses.
