Consecutive Interpreting – Tips on taking notes

Keith Armstrong Dip CIT (IH Company Training, Barcelona)

This workshop will focus on the nature of consecutive interpreting, followed by a more in-depth look at the art of note-taking. On the basis of this, we shall then practise taking notes from short speeches in /Spanish/Catalan.

Keith trained and worked as a freelance conference interpreter (French, German, Spanish) in London between 1997 and 2001. He also worked at the University of Westminster as personal assistant to the coordinator of the European Masters in Conference Interpreting – a project set up by the European Commission, European Parliament and a number of European universities offering postgraduate courses in conference interpreting.

Metaphysical Gore, continued

Brian Brennan (IH Company Training, Barcelona)

This is supposed to be a conference on translation, so let's do some. I'm publications translator for the Sitges-Catalonia International Film Festival, and this workshop will look very briefly at some of the features of this sub-genre, before providing workshop practice on translating short extracts from film briefs and critics' essays. Choose your original text and target language from English, Catalan or Spanish. This session is suitable for anyone with a high level of Spanish and/or Catalan as well as English.

Brian is Language Training Manager at IH Company Training, Barcelona. His work for the last few years has largely been in the area of Business English, and has included writing Internet-based courses, teacher training, materials creation and course development, work on competence-based assessment for the European Commission, oral examining for UCLES, reporting for publishers, review writing for Modern English Teacher and being the publications translator for the Sitges–Catalonia International Film Festival.

Using back-translation to explore structural differences between Spanish and English

Andy Haddock (IH Company Training, Barcelona)

Back-translation involves translating a target text in Spanish back into the source text in English from which it was originally translated. While this exercise may not be completely realistic, it can show the structural differences between the two languages and the techniques used to smooth out these differences.

Andy is the creator and tutor of the popular IH Barcelona Introduction to Translation courses, both distance and in situ.

The general paper: what the examiners are looking for?

Mike Maudsley (IH Barcelona)

This session centres on the Institute of Linguists examination Paper 1, the 'general' paper and attempts to explain what the examiners look out for when they are correcting. (Mostly aimed at the Spanish - English exam, but of some use to English - Spanish too.)

Mike is the creator and tutor of the popular IH Translation Course leading to the Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation, both by distance and in situ. He has been working as a translator for fifteen years.

David Quesada (IH Company Training, Barcelona)

Subtitling, dubbing and conference interpreting: 3 digital professional training activities

Richard Samson (Universitat de Vic)

Truly professional activities make wonderful training activities. We have compiled a variety of free, autonomous training activities that students can do on an ordinary PC. The session will centre on demonstrations of three such activities from the field of professional translation. We will also introduce the "Poor Technology Group", a group for people who work in the field of education and who seek innovative low-budget digital solutions to vocational (professional training) educational problems.

Richard has been a teacher of interpreting and computer skills for translators in the "Facultat de Ciències Humanes, Traducció i Documentació", Universitat de Vic, since its foundation in 1993.

Round Table

An opportunity to exchange opinions and ask questions. The Round Table panel is made up of translation teachers and correctors and some of today’s speakers, who will discuss and answer questions on aspects of the world of translation, frequently asked questions, typical problems and errors, personal experiences, translation exams and any other connected topic which the audience raises.

Se trata de una mesa redonda en la que participaran asistentes y tutores para hablar de Traducción; preguntas frecuentes en el mundo de la traducción, errores más usuales, cómo solucionarlos, experiencias personales, los exámenes de traducción como el IOL,...en fin, todo lo que penséis que podría ser interesante para intercambiar opiniones sobre vuestra profesión.
