CELTYL

University of Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Young Learners

CELTYL

The Young Learners course is designed to provide initial training in teaching English as a foreign language to young learners.

Who is the course for?

It is intended for candidates with little or no previous experience of teaching English who wish to learn the skills and techniques necessary for teaching the 8-13 age-group, and for teachers with no previous training in this field.

CELTA-qualified teachers, with teaching experience but interested in learning more about teaching young learners, should see two-week CELTA extension course.

Course design

Like the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), the Young Learners course is highly practical in approach. Methodology and Language Analysis sessions are firmly linked to classroom practice, while Teaching Practice takes place from Day One.

Candidates will be observed and evaluated on six hours teaching throughout the course and are also provided with the required eight hours observation of experienced teachers.

The CELT YL Course is programmed to run as a full-time, intensive course [sample timetables].

The total contact time on the course is 120 hours, and candidates are also expected to liaise in their Teaching Practice groups outside course hours in order to plan their lessons, with guidelines from course tutors.
