Marc Prensky on the 21st Century Digital Learner

Don't bother me, Mom, I'm playing with my phone...

A (fairly) new article by Marc Prensky: Young Minds, Fast Times: The Twenty-First-Century Digital Learner.

On Nik Peachey's excellent Quick Shout blog, you can see Marc Prensky being interviewed by Gavin Dudeney at IATEFL 2009.

If you are not familiar with Marc Prensky [website | Wikipedia], his 2001 Digital Immigrants, Digital Natives article has been very influential.

You're right, Kate -- absolutely. But what is the word I was looking for?

Merely 'using' doesn't convey what my daughter was doing with it...

So I actually asked her what she had been doing...

Not playing, as Kate pointed out, but tranferring phone numbers from a diary to her phone.

So, "Don't bother me, Mom, I'm doing something practical on my phone..."?

Of course kids do practical things with the cellphones! I don't see what the problem is!

No problem at all, Don. Kids DO practical things with their phones. They're not toys!
