Improve your Language Analysis for Teaching Purposes
Analysing and Integrating LanguageA 30 hour course in analysing and integrating language for teaching purposes. The course is aimed at teachers of English at secondary level. It will look at some of the issues involved in teaching language to teenagers, in the areas of English grammar, discourse and lexis.
The focus of the course will be overtly practical, with the emphasis on providing teachers with ideas, tasks or activity types that will stimulate language use in their classrooms.
The course is in two parts:
Part 1
During the course major language areas will be discussed with reference to both published teaching materials and authentic English. Particular reference will be made to common problems encountered by Catalan & Castilian speaking students learning English in a secondary school environment.
Topics include:
- Time, Tense and Aspect
- Modality
- Mood: Indicative, Subjunctive and Imperative
- Voice: Active and Passive
- Discourse Analysis
- Syntax: word order, sentence structure
- Lexis and the grammar of lexis
- Coursebook approaches to language analysis
- Common errors caused by first language interference
Part 2
This second part will look at ways to integrate the language items above through practical activity types aimed at developing linguistic and communicative competence in the classroom. Specific reference will be made to adapting and supplementing coursebook material.
