Teaching Writing Skills for Exam Classes

Our five-module Teaching Writing Skills for Exam Classes course is suitable for teachers who are engaged in helping students write in English more fluently and accurately.

It is particularly relevant to teachers of examinations classes such as FCE and CAE, and also to teachers of English for academic purposes.

Course content

Course content includes:

  • Approaches to writing: process, product and genre
  • Paragraphing and sentence types
  • Punctuation
  • Coherence
  • Cohesion
  • Correction of written work

This is a very practical course in which you will be asked to experiment in your classroom with the ideas and materials provided on the course then report your findings to your fellow course participants and peers for discussion and evaluation.

Feedback: Thanks for running a superb course. I have really enjoyed it and am sad to see it end. I feel I have greatly benefitted from this course and your comments

Start dates

The next start dates for this course are as follows:

  • October 20 -- December 12 (8 weeks)
  • January 19 2009 -- March 13 (8 weeks)
  • March 16 2009 -- May 8 (8 weeks)

Given the nature of online courses, although we recommend you to begin on the start date given, it is possible for "late starters" to catch up quite quickly, within the first module of the course.

Note that courses will not begin unless there is a minimum of four participants.

Length & time commitment

It is notoriously difficult to predict exactly how many hours an online course will take any given student. For our courses, we believe you should estimate at least minimum 2.5 hours per module for the reading and completion of the tasks set, giving around 25 hours minimum for this particular course.

That estimate excludes the amount of class time you use for experimenting with the ideas and material from the course.

You should aim to complete each course module within 7 to 10 days.

"A fundamental part of the course is that it gives you ideas to try out in class," says course designer Roger Hunt.

"The course tasks then involve reporting back on how the ideas worked in practice, and discussing this with the other course participants on our forum."

Is this the right course for?

What are the four main types of sentence?

When does one paragraph end and another begin?

What is the difference between coherence and cohesion?

What is the difference between process, product and genre approaches to writing?

When do we use a semi-colon as opposed to a comma or a colon?

If you had problems answering any of the above, this course is for you!
