Teaching English to Young Learners
New Trends in Young Learner Language Teaching
YL 1 -- Friday 11 November 2005 10.00-12.00
Many researchers and practitioners are looking into innovative ways of developing young learners' language skills. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is fast becoming seen as the "correct approach". Schools, institutions and research groups are all discussing this issue.
This session will take a look at how CLIL is developing in the young learners classroom environment. We will also look at practical ways to integrate the four components of CLIL- content, communication, cognition and culture.
Teaching the Very Young: Appropriate activity types for 3-6 year olds
YL 2 -- Friday 2 December 2005 10.00-12.00
This session will look at the characteristics of the learners in this age group and address basic principles for teaching such young learners.
The emphasis will be on providing examples of successful activity types for integrating English.
Using Multi-Sensory Task Types
YL 3 -- Friday 3 February 2006 10.00-12.00
Teachers are always looking for ways to help their students learn more effectively. A teaching approach which combines auditory, visual, kinaesthetic and tactile elements into a learning task can be one of the paths we can take to provide a helpful and positive learning environment.
This session will look at the implications of taking this approach and practical ideas on how to integrate it into our lessons.
Using stories and drama in the language classroom
YL 4 -- Friday 24 February 2006 10.00-12.00
How can we teach language through real tasks? Stories are the most realistic way to integrate language if the learning process is to reflect first language acquisition. Drama can be an extension to story telling and an enjoyable way for the children to use English but it can also be a "risk task".
This session will look at practical ways to integrate both story telling and drama, along with strategies for controlling the children and the language while the learners are participating.
Arts and Craft in the language classroom
YL 5 -- Friday 24 March 2006 10.00-12.00
Getting a young learner to make or create something is always a memorable experience for the child.
This session will focus on ideas and practical suggestions for incorporating arts and craft work in the language classroom with very young learners.
Developing writing and using L1 as a teaching tool
YL 6 -- Friday 21 April 2006 10.00-12.00
Many teachers have different opinions about the use of L1 in the classroom. This session aims to provide suggestions and practical ideas on how to get the most out of this resource but at the same time encourage L2 learning.
These questions will be covered in the session:
- How can we make use of L1?
- How can we adapt materials to use in the classroom?
- How can we encourage the learners to develop their writing skills in L2?
Games and vocabulary recycling
YL 7 -- Friday 5 May 2006 10.00-12.00
The aim of this session is to provide participants with a range of games that help to recycle and extend vocabulary learnt in class.
The focus will be on ways to encourage learning through enjoyable and stimulating activity types for the children.
Using Technology in the Young Learner Classroom
YL 8 -- Friday 26 May 2006 10.00-12.00
Teachers are always looking for other ways to increase learning opportunities in the classroom.
This final session of the series looks at how we can use CDRoms, electronic whiteboards and the video in the classroom to increase motivation, participation and concentration.
