Getting the most out of Learn English

What it contains

Learn English follows the same format in each issue and contains the following sections:

  • A reading text, at two levels of difficulty, for intermediate and advanced learners
  • Comprehension questions on the text
  • English vocabulary exercises, again at intermediate and advanced levels
  • A "What do you think" section (which we include principally for teachers using the exercises with their classes)

Learn English - user's guide

Each new newsletter we post on this site has a start page that looks like this:

Learn English #1 Intermediate

The start page lists the contents of the current issue, from which you can pick what interests you most.

We suggest that you decide whether or not your level of English is intermediate or advanced, and begin with the reading text.

We provide you with a certain amount of help with words we think you might find difficult: click on the words underlined in the text for a glossary:

Don't forget, however, that working out meaning from context is an important reading skill. Before you click the glossary links, try to guess the meaning. Then use the glossary to check that your guess was right!

For further help with vocabulary, these online English dictionaries may be useful to you.

Remember that you can have more than one browser window open at the same time, and move from one to the other, from the exercise to the dictionary and back, for example.

Having read the text...

As shown the example below, having read the text (1), and answered the comprehension questions that accompany it (2), you then have (3), the associated vocabulary questions:

The vocabulary questions are designed to reinforce and extend some of the things you have seen in the text.

However, we suggest that you read the text first, because we think that it is important to encounter new words in context.

More exercises

At the foot of each page you can use the "more exercises" link to return to the full list of contents for all issues, where you can select particular items, eg. of vocabulary, to work on.
