How do you teach people a language?

Roger Hunt (right) looks at some of the early theories, his favourite those of Nicholas Clenard, who taught his pupils Latin by babbling fluently to them in it for a month.

There is also a honorable mention for -- among others -- Francois Gouin, who taught his pupils French with the aid of a spot of carpentry...
