English Film and Book Club (post-CAE)

About the course

Our Film and Book Club is designed for students who have finished a CAE course and want to continue improving their level of English though reading novels and watching films.

We will choose a novel that has been made into a film. First we`ll read the novel and then we`ll watch the film and discuss them both.

Most of the reading will be done outside class – the teacher will assign a certain number of chapters to be read after each lesson and those will be discussed in the following class. When we have finished the novel, we`ll watch the film. Most of the film will be watched outside class although some parts of it may be watched in class for discussion purposes. The teacher will give students a certain amount of time to watch the film at home so that in the following lesson the class will be able to compare and contrast the novel and the film.

The books and films we watch and read will be negotiated with the students and the teacher but here are some titles which have been very popular in past courses:

  • Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn
  • Pride & Prejudice, Jane Austin
  • Atonement, Ian McEwan
  • Life Of Pi, Yann Martel
  • Breakfast At Tiffanys, Truman Capote
  • The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, John Boyne
