The International House Barcelona Young Learners Extension to CELTA course is a 60-hour course designed for CELTA qualified teachers with some post-CELTA teaching experience, who wish to extend their skills to include those necessary for teaching English to young learners.
At the end of 2016 Cambridge English Language Assessment decided that it would no longer award the YL Extension course to CELTA. However, at IH Barcelona we believe that the YL Extension course is still a VERY valid course for teachers. For this reason, we have decided to continue to run this course as it was before Cambridge withdrew. We will have the same tutors, the same format – with input sessions, feedback and planning, teaching practice and assignments – as we have done every year that we have run this course. The only difference being that, at the end of the course, you will receive an International House Barcelona YL Extension to CELTA certificate, rather than one from Cambridge.
The course is based on teaching practice and lesson evaluation, and is overtly practical in content and approach.
The programme comprises 30 hours of seminars and workshops and 30 hours of teaching practice, feedback and assisted lesson preparation.
August 27–September 7, 2018
Total course fee (to be paid at least four weeks before the course begins): €900
Full-time over 11 days. The course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment. Full attendance is very important.
As on the CELTA course you will have teaching practice every day. When you are not teaching yourself, you will watch your colleagues teach. You will also see you tutors teach with each group.
You will teach two different age groups on the course: 8-10 year olds and 11-13 year olds.
You will spend one week with each group.
The exact timetable used on a given course depends on a number of factors, but these are the most commonly used.
Note that whichever format is used, after 5pm you will need to spend time liaising with colleagues about what you have been and will be teaching your learners in the teaching practice sessions.
The course programme is designed to enable candidates to:
